Fourth Week Carousel Evaluation

The 6 disperse dyes
Fashion - Week 4
During the fourth week of the Carousel we undertook the basic aspects of Fashion. Our session included using disperse dyes to create a fabric piece to then using recycling bags to create a fashion piece for a student to model.
Disperse dyes and Embroidery -
The session kicked off with a testing of the disperse dyes, due to the fact that the dyes wouldn't have came out the same colour on the fabric as they appear in the pallet. By doing this, we had an understanding of what colours we could use for our actual designs.
The testing of the dyes

With this understanding, we moved on to create our actual piece using the dyes and then, once they were dry, the paper was heat pressed under a sheet of fabric. This then would print the design on to the fabric. A very interesting technique which I personally have never seen before! After doing this, we had our masterpieces ready for the embroidery !

My final designs after the heat pressing process
Embroidery is using a thread and needle to go through the fabric which helps to bring out certain features of the design. There were 3 types of stitching that we used; one was the basic normal stitching, to then the cross stitching and a form of loop stitching. Basic stitching is common to me but the others developed some new sewing skills, which could potentially be very handy for any future projects involving creating effects for costumes, or just for basic sewing. To see how our designs looked on a piece of clothing. I chose a t-shirt and it worked well !

Creating a Recycled outfit -
The mannequin we used to build upon

The general idea of this lesson was to use different types of plastic bags to create a wonderful dress for a student to model later on. Now there were several techniques to using these bags to create different effects. One of them was a scrunching technique which we used around the back of the dress as it created a nice overcoat look to the tail of the dress. Another was the circular frills and this created a nice little effect around the front of the dress, and apparently this was done well by my group ! There were several others but they were not used by us specifically.

Our final masterpiece
Once our dress was finished being built upon the mannequin, we needed someone to model our dress so a second year student, Bea, volunteered to model. So after all of the groups had someone ready to volunteer for, we were ready for a catwalk !
